Full Story:
Dr John Christoforetti left Notre Dame for Washington, DC in 1997 where he spent the next nine years learning the art and science of medicine and orthopaedic surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. During his four years of medical school he continued to teach boxing and martial arts at the Washington Sports Clubs. As a senior student he was awarded the highest honors for performance during externships on the orthpaedic services at Duke University and UPMC. He was identified as a leader amongst his medical school class and given opportunity to stay at Georgetown for five years of orthopaedic residency training.
Residency was a busy and productive time for Dr Christoforetti. He assisted in the perfomance of over 1800 surgeries encompassing all areas of orthopaedics. He delivered many academic lectures and was honored by the medical school class of 2006 with an award for excellence in teaching. As consultant for the National Institutes of Health he devised a method for studying embryonic tendon healing by operating on chicks inside their eggs. The faculty physicians at Georgetown named him to Alpha Omega Alpha, the prestigious national medical honor society in 2005. That same year the American Orthopaedic Association designated him an "Emerging Leader."
He finished his time at Georgetown as academic Chief Resident and directed the educational syllabus for the entire residency program. He was awarded a scholarship to spend six weeks learning about alpine sports medicine and trauma on Mammoth Mountain in California. It was here that he worked with world pioneers in joint preserving hip surgery as the only resident invitee to the International Society for Surgical Preservation of the Hip.
His passion for athletics continued and he played a role in caring for athletes at all levels including the Georgetown Hoyas, Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards and DC United.
