Sports Medicine Fellowship

Upon completion of residency and passing his Specialty Boards, Dr John Christoforetti traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina for a one year fellowship in Sports Medicine with Dr Richard Hawkins and other faculty at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

The additional year of sports medicine training produced many opportunities to learn and research original ideas. As a fellow he was head team physician for Carolina High School and assistant team physician for the USC-Upstate athletic program, the Greenville Drive Class-A Baseball team and the Colorado Rockies during Spring Training in Tucson, Arizona.

His research included pioneering the use of laser doppler technology to describe effects of arthroscopic surgery on rotator cuff blood supply. He also designed the first x-ray and clinical study of the hip in professional baseball pitchers. He completed his year by spending 1 month at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado where he worked with Dr Marc Philippon, one of the world’s preeminent hip arthroscopists.

He has practiced continuously in the Pittsburgh area since 2007 and has successfully performed over 600 hip arthroscopy procedures and over 2000 shoulder and knee surgeries. His patients have included professional, amateur, and recreational athletes of all ages.

Dr John Christoforetti left Notre Dame for Washington, DC in 1997 where he spent the next nine years learning the art and science of medicine and surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. During his four years of medical school he continued to teach boxing and martial arts at the Washington Sports Clubs. As a senior student he was awarded the highest honors for performance during externships on the orthpaedic services at Duke University and UPMC. He was identified as a leader amongst his medical school class and given opportunity to stay at Georgetown for five years of residency training.

Residency was a busy and productive time for Dr Christoforetti. He assisted in the perfomance of over 1800 surgeries encompassing all areas of s. He delivered many academic lectures and was honored by the medical school class of 2006 with an award for excellence in teaching. As consultant for the National Institutes of Health he devised a method for studying embryonic tendon healing by operating on chicks inside their eggs. The faculty physicians at Georgetown named him to Alpha Omega Alpha, the prestigious national medical honor society in 2005. That same year the American Association designated him an “Emerging Leader.”

He finished his time at Georgetown as academic Chief Resident and directed the educational syllabus for the entire residency program. He was awarded a scholarship to spend six weeks learning about alpine sports medicine and trauma on Mammoth Mountain in California. It was here that he worked with world pioneers in joint preserving hip surgery as the only resident invitee to the International Society for Surgical Preservation of the Hip.

His passion for athletics continued and he played a role in caring for athletes at all levels including the Georgetown Hoyas, Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards and DC United.

John Christoforetti, MD was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1975. He graduated with highest honors from Peters Township High School.

As a student at the University of Notre Dame his academic success earned him membership in Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national premedical honors society.

He also continued his athletic pursuits through participation in the Notre Dame Boxing program. As a freshman he was named “Best Freshman Boxer” and fought to a draw in the championship of his weight class. He earned the “Best Boxer” award twice during his upperclass years and was champion in his weight division three consecutive years. As a junior and senior he served as team captain. The RecSports Division of the athletic department awarded him the Lifetime Service Award in 1997 for his role in the men’s and women’s boxing programs.
